Blue and Gold Macaw for Sale

Expert AuthorStop! Warning! A blue and gold macaw for sale in the classified section of your newspaper may not be what you want. Macaws are beautiful, and macaws are popular, but do you want to buy a macaw from a private owner?

A blue and gold macaw for sale by anyone other than a breeder may or may not be a good parrot. You will want to ask a number of questions. You will also want to visit more than once before finalizing the purchase.

Temperament

The first question you should ask about a blue and gold macaw for sale by owner is one regarding the parrot’s temperament. Is it a good pet? Is it happy and content? Does it bite? An honest owner who has a blue and gold macaw for sale will answer such questions truthfully. You will want to judge for yourself before buying, however. Arrange to visit the homes of blue and gold macaws for sale at least twice, watching the owners interact with the pet parrots. If an owner is reluctant to touch his or her parrot, there is probably a good reason.

A good choice is a blue and gold macaw that will come out of the cage readily, and sit peacefully on a finger or perch. It should show signs of playfulness when given a toy or put on a parrot gym.

Health

A blue and gold macaw may be for sale because it is not in good health. Ask when it was last seen by a veterinarian. Ask for any health records. Look for these signs of illness.

* Plucking: If it has been plucking feathers, the blue and gold macaw is in distress. Ask the owner about it.

* Quietness: Do NOT choose a blue and gold macaw because it is quiet. Quietness in the parrot population means illness. It is not normal for a blue and gold macaw to be quiet.

* Appetite: A blue and gold macaw that has not been as eager to eat its favorite food may be ill. Ask the owner what its favorite food is. Then ask to see it eat that food.

* Touch: Ask if the blue and gold macaw likes to be petted. Then try to pet the parrot. If it reacts the opposite of expected, it may not be feeling well.

* Habits: When a blue and gold macaw is not well, it can be expected to change its habits. It may change behavior patterns. It may stop flying around its cage. Ask about changes in habits.

Reason for Sale

A blue and gold macaw for sale is leaving home for a reason. Ask what that reason is.

Perhaps the owner has grown old and is no longer able to care for the bird. The owner may even have died. Parrots often outlive an owner, having been purchased later in the owner’s life. If the blue and gold macaw is being sold because its owner died, it will be lonely. It may or may not respond to your love. Be prepared to give it a lot of loving attention and patience, if you purchase.

Some blue and gold macaws are being sold because the owner must relocate and cannot keep the parrot. These are probably good birds to buy.

Helpful Tip

Do your homework before you buy a blue and gold macaw for sale by owner. If you decide to purchase, try to purchase the parrot’s home cage and toys so that it will be less stressed by the change.
