A Perch Fit for a King – or Queen Parrot

A parrot perch is essential for any parrot, no matter the species or the size. In fact, your parrot will need more than one parrot perch. It should have at least three parrot perches.
Your three parrot perches should be of different styles. They should also be made of different materials, giving variety in texture and thickness.
1. Wooden Parrot Perch
This parrot perch is the main one your parrot will use. It should be a dowel perch made of Manzanita or hardwood. It should protrude horizontally in the center (top to bottom) of the cage.
2. Rope Parrot Perch
The second parrot perch needed in your bird’s cage is a sleeping perch. Purchase a rope perch in a U or horseshoe shape for sleeping. Place this second parrot perch in the upper third of the cage near a very private corner.
3. Concrete Parrot Perch
Now that you have a wooden dowel perch and a rope horseshoe perch, make the third parrot perch a new texture. Give your parrot a perch that will keep his feet healthy. Choose one that is concrete or a sandy texture. Plexy-glass is also a possibility. Place this perch wherever you wish.
Other Parrot Perches
It is not necessary to place a parrot perch by the food dish. Your bird will get its food, and will enjoy the challenge of having to get it without being on a nearby perch.
A parrot perch on the cage door will help you teach your parrot the “Step Up” command without reaching into its cage – its castle.
CAUTION: It may be tempting to use a nearby tree branch as a parrot perch, but this can be harmful to your parrot. You may introduce parasites and disease into the parrot cage. Another danger is that some woods can be poisonous to your parrot. If you have researched the matter, and know the branch in your garden is safe wood, be sure you boil it to kill germs and parasites before making it into a parrot perch.
