How to care for Senegal Parrots is the topic we were considering in our last entry. We started by supposing you recently acquired two Senegal Parrot babies. The Senegal Parrot info we are providing is not meant to be exhaustive, but it is a beginning toward knowing how to care for Senegal Parrots.
Senegal Parrot Cage
The Senegal Parrot is considered a medium-sized species and requires a cage suitable for that size. Choose a cage that is approximately 24″ W x 20″ D x 60″ H (overall) with 3/4″ bar spacing. A playpen top is good for your Senegal Parrot. Pull-out drawers are good for keeping the bird clean and making your work easier. Place the cage in a protected part of the room where your Senegal Parrot will have its own personal space.
Senegal Parrot Perches
Your Senegal Parrot will appreciate having a variety of perches. Your cage may come with round wooden dowel perches. Add a forked grooming perch, and a swing. Give Senegal Parrots a concrete perch to keep their feet healthy.
Senegal Parrot Toys
Every parrot needs toys, and the Senegal Parrot is no exception. Toys keep the parrot mentally alert, occupied, and happy. You should have a supply of toys that you rotate each week so your bird will not become bored. Here are a few ideas.
* Paper chew up toys in various shapes and colors
* Rope preening toys for your Senegal Parrot to pull apart
* Wood and bead toys in bright colors and shapes
* Treasure chest of treats for your Senegal Parrot to retrieve
* Interactive talking toys to help your bird learn to talk
* Shreddable toys for your Senegal Parrot to destroy with glee
Senegal Parrot Food
One of the most important points in learning how to care for Senegal Parrots is learning what to feed them. Most parrots will eat seeds, of course, but a steady diet of seeds is not good for them. A bag of seeds mixed with dried fruit and nuts provides good treats.
Your Senegal Parrot should get a main course of parrot pellet food. Organic pellets contain no potentially dangerous chemicals. Supplement with fresh fruits and vegetables that you have for your family. You may give your Senegal Parrot cooked vegetables, too, on occasion.
CAUTION: Some foods are poisonous to Senegal Parrots and must be avoided. These include alcohol, avocados, caffeine, chocolate, fava beans, navy beans, rhubarb, and sprouted lima beans.
