Indian Ringneck Parrot – Classified Parakeet

Expert AuthorThe Indian Ringneck Parrot is classified as a parakeet. Known also as the Rose-ringed Parakeet, the Indian Ringneck Parrot has a hooked beak, long tail, and moderately small body. Because of these three features, they have been classified as parakeets, even though they are true parrots.

Description

The Indian Ringneck Parrot is approximately 14 to 16 inches in length. They are predominantly green with aqua tints. Yellow underlines wing and tail feathers. For the most part, male and female Indian Ringneck Parrots are identical in appearance. The male, however, has a black ring around his neck.
This ring is highlighted with blue, pink, and turquoise. The female does not have a distinct ring, but may appear to have a slightly darker green at the neck. The Indian Ringneck Parrot’s dark eyes are ringed in white, which is ringed in golden orange. Its beak is rosy red. Indian Ringneck Parrots are found in arid regions of Asia and Africa.

Potential Pets

Indian Ringneck Parrots are said to make excellent pets. They are easy to tame, and relatively easy to teach. Their intelligence makes them able to learn concepts quickly. They are always eager to show off what they have learned.

The high intelligence of the Indian Ringneck Parrot makes it necessary to provide toys that will challenge and stimulate the bird. As with any parrot, you should give it toys and ropes to chew. You should also provide puzzle toys that must be solved to get at the treat.

Your Indian Ringneck Parrot will be an independent little pet – an individualist. While some love to bathe, others have an intense hatred for baths. This means some will want to splash in their water dish or go in the family shower, while others will have to be misted once a week.

Talking Parrots

Indian Ringneck Parrots learn to talk, given time and patience. Some proud owners claim their talents nearly on a par with African Grey Parrots. More objective observers find the Indian Ringneck Parrot mediocre, but able to learn a few words.

Other Ringneck Parrots

In addition to the Indian Ringneck Parrot, you will find other Ringneck Parrot species, with differences in coloring and size. Due to the ease with which breeders can cross-breed these parrots, those not found in the wild may sport any of a myriad of color combinations.
